ACTIVITIES, ACHIEVEMENTS AND OUTPUTS

In line with its objectives, the Board adopted several concepts and programs to ameliorate the daily living. conditions of the people of Jerusalem without prejudice to religion or race, especially in the face of the mounting hardships and economic difficulties.

Our programs focus on education, training, and job creation. Over the past four years, the Association implemented the following activities: In line with our motto.

"Work is a right to everyone."

The association Established an Employment Center to place job seekers in available jobs. (Web site: www.alami.net/ec) This ongoing project was funded with a grant from the Canadian Fund with a contribution of US$ 42,000. The Center officially started operation in December 2005 for a period of two years. We could place around 100 unemployed people in suitable jobs during that time. We have secured a grant from the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development to continue for two more years, as it is one of our strategic goals to attempt to alleviate some of the hardships Jerusalemites face through decent employment.

A Project Manager operates the center. The main activities of the Center are to:

  • Set up a database for the unemployed and match such data with available jobs in the market.
  • Assist job seekers in preparing marketable resumes that are competitive and attractive to the employers.
  • Provide the necessary training to the unemployed to upgrade their skills.

This Center, in its first phase of two years, helped place around 100 young unemployed job seekers in remunerative employment in institutions and provided training to upgrade the skills of 10 young professionals in computer programming, and supported the training of two guides. The Center also implemented a training program for tourism painting.

In 2008, the Arab Fund for Social and Economic Development in Kuwait contributed the amount of US $ 70,000 to fund the continuation of the work of the Employment Center. This is a two-year program and will extend to 2010.

We have started to work on a new project in the hope it will employ a few people and generate some income for the Association to fund its various projects and ambitious programs. This will be a ceramics painting workshop where De La Salle College graciously agreed to provide us with a room to set up this workshop in. We hope to employ and train a few people in this project. We managed to secure the funds necessary for the start-up of this workshop. We implemented the first phase of this project with a course in ceramics painting, and 14 people successfully finished this training. We recently received a grant from the Australian Consulate (AUSAID) for 9,500$ to implement a second phase of this project.

In line with Our Motto:

"Education for all is a challenge that we must meet." The Association established a student fund to provide tuition fees for school students to assist unemployed or low-income families. A total of 60 students were supported with partial tuition fees. The association also facilitated four scholarships for study in Russia to Tawjihi graduates of 2006. This was done in collaboration with the Palestinian Orthodox Russian Society in Beit Jala. This project was stopped due to lack of funds."
